Sweet Tea Shawl - Tangier

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending the DFW Fiber Fest at the Irving Convention Center. It was truly a wonderful show with amazing hospitality and a great variety of fiber arts. Going to another part of the country with a different climate provided great inspiration for my knitting. Fortunately I had brought 2 skeins of Tangier with me.
The shawl worked up fairly quickly over the weekend.  Tangier is a silk blend with 8 colors per colorway.  It plays well on the needles and blocks out beautifully.  A slightly modified Roman Stripe created a lovely, open pattern.

  • US 9 (recommend at least 36" long cord)

  • Yarn Needle

  1. I have been trying to make this shawl, but I wonder if the pattern could be checked for a mistake. The second time I get to row 4, I don't have enough stitches before the marker. It works out ok the first time, but not the second.

    1. The most likely is a YO was missed. 4 stitches are added every other row. The stitch is a slightly modified Roman Stripe Pattern and is a multiple of 2.
      1 - K1, YO, K1, [YO, K1], to st before marker, K1, YO
      2 - K
3 - K1, YO, K2 (this accounts for previous K1, YO), [K2tog - this is decreasing back to original number of stitches)], to 2 st before marker, K2 (this accounts for previous K1, YO), YO
4 - K4 (this is for previous K1, YO, K2), [K2tog, YO], to 3 st before marker (this is from previous K2, YO), K8 (k3 before marker, K2, K3 after marker)
5 - K1, YO, K3, [YO, K2tog - this should be working the K2tog, YO from previous row], to 3 sts before marker, K3, YO

  2. I am also having trouble with row 4 on the second repeat. I'm one stitch short on each side.

  3. Please respond to my question. On row 4, it says to knit in pattern to 3 st before marker, then knit 8. I can either knit to 4 sts before marker and knit 10 or knit to 2 sts before marker and knit 6. I've re-done this several times. Should it be knit 6? or......

    1. When doing 3 stitches before marker it is K3, sm, K2, sm, K3 (3 + 2 + 3 = 8) - you are essentially knitting the K2, YO, K2, YO, K2 from the previous row.

  5. I see there has been a revision to row 7. That is where my problem occurred. As it was originally written, there were only 2 YO's in the row. Now there are 4.

  7. How many stitches should there be on row 3? I have 34. I have restarted this pattern 4 times and cannot get row 4 to come out right. I am not a novice but row 4 is a stumbling block.

    1. I just cast on to double check it - Row 3 ends with 20 stitches
For row 4 there should only be 1 K2tog, YO on each side
Row 1 the k1, yo will be repeated 2 times
Row 3 the K2tog will be repeated 2 times
Row 5 there can only be 1 k2tog, yo (you are knitting the 2 k2togs together)

  8. I'm sorry, I should have specified row 3 of the 8 pattern rows;

    1. That is row 3 from the pattern section. The first time through there are only 20 stitches at that point.

    2. Are you referring to the 2nd repeat of the pattern row or the first?

  9. First repeat. First row 3 of 8.

  11. This is for Liz: Did you correct Row 7? There was an error in that row that was corrected after May 4 and yarn-overs were added. It works fine with the corrected row.

  12. Yes, I saw your post and corrected the pattern. Solved my problem but I think I chose the wrong yarn; I still keep losing some yo's. Thanks
